The Brooklyn
A "new" House Recipe without adding a single new ingredient to the bar
Turns out, infants are not necessarily conducive to furthering development of my home bar and sharing that development with a (growing! thank you!) audience. The tradeoff is 100% worth it - current review of early parenthood is an unreserved 10/10 with a major caveat of “may never feel rested again.”
But that does mean that there’s likely not to be a ton of new content around here through the rest of the year at least. I’m going to be doing research and making notes as best I can to hit the ground running in 2026, but I’m also realizing that there are a ton of drinks I really like, make a lot of, have already written about, and require no new ingredients at all.
Chief among these is the Brooklyn. I first wrote about this nearly 7 years ago, which feels absolutely crazy. I hadn’t made one in quite some time, but when friends delivered dinner on Sunday and had time to stay for a drink, for some reason it was the first thing that popped into my mind.
Having these standard House Recipes and a consistent home bar composition has truly been such a benefit in these first weeks of parenthood. Lots of folks come over to meet the baby, and my reputation precedes me, but not having to think all that hard or be creative on the spot while still delivering a top-quality cocktail is a huge reason I undertook this endeavor 2 years ago. And it’s really paying off.
Anyways, here’s The Brooklyn:
The Brooklyn - A Delicious Riff on the Manhattan
The Manhattan is one of the more riff-able cocktails, and the Brooklyn may be my favorite riff. It take the Perfect Manhattan idea, but it replaces the sweet vermouth with maraschino, a cherry liqueur.
